The Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Initial Hybrid course is designed for healthcare providers who provide pre-hospital trauma care such as EMS or Fire or serve as an integral part of a hospital-based trauma care team.
The focus of this program is to enhance and reinforce important concepts, including:
- Identifying the kinematics related to trauma and how they impact pre-hospital care
- Reinforce and enhance good trauma assessment skills
- Reinforce basic and advanced airway management skills
- How to appropriately assess patients with suspected multi-systems trauma including scene treatment, packaging, and transport
- Effective resuscitative team dynamics
- How to effectively extricate trauma victims from an automobile
- Reinforce and enhance skills relating to splinting, backboard, and packaging trauma victims
- Learn key concepts related to dealing with pediatric and geriatric victims
In addition, students will have an opportunity to work in learning stations while improving essential skills using guided step-by-step instructor-led hands-on practice. The training environment is stress-free and designed to help facilitate learning through group participation.
This is a HYBRID course meaning there is an online component that consists of several modules and a written test that MUST be completed PRIOR to coming to class for the practical portion. Approximately two weeks before the course date, an email will be sent with the access code for the online component of the class through JB Learning. The code will also provide you with access to a digital version of the 9th Edition PHTLS textbook as well as the electronic Course Manual that you can use in preparation for the course. Please follow the instructions and complete the online portion of the class PRIOR to coming in on your specified course date for the practical portion of the class. You MUST bring the completion certificate to class or you will not be allowed to participate in the practical testing! Please note that the final written test is not based only on the information found in the online modules, the book materials must be studied as well to increase the likelihood of successful completion.

Tuition & Fees
All tuition and fees are due upon registration. All registrations are first come, first enrolled. The deadline to register for the PHTLS program is two weeks prior to class providing spaces are available. A course code will be sent for the online portion of the course after registration has closed, approximately two weeks before the course. Instructor teaching schedules may impact this timeline.
NOTE: HVA’S EMS Education retains the right to deny any application, for any reason. If the school denies the application prior to the class date, all tuition and fees paid will be refunded. There are NO REFUNDS for course supplies, including textbooks.
